This the worst rental car company I have encountered. I called prior to renting a car to ask how much deposit would be held on my credit card so that I could have the available funds. The representative was unpleasant and said VISA logo 15% of rental and all others would require $350 deposit. I told her I have a VISA and I asked what the deposit would be if the rental was $79.00 total and she got irritated and repeated that VISA logo is 15% and all others were $350. I informed her I had a reservation and was quoted $79.00 for the weekend rental and needed to verify the deposit. She asked why I was so confused. I explained the reason for my call, that I did not want any surprises. She kept repeating until she hung up. I arrived at the airport to pick up rental and they put through a deposit of $315 on my VISA card so it was declined and I did not get the car for a weekend rental of $79.00 total. I will NEVER recommend my friends, family, co-workers or public to use this company with their misinformation, rudeness and lack of concern for customer inquiries.
Other than that, the rental was fine, and Thrifty replaced my car when the tail light burned out. However the new car that I got from SFO had no floor mats, and it always reminded me that oil change is due (they forgot to reset it). Minor annoyances.
I went next door and ALAMO saved the day!!! Everything about the experience with ALAMO was the best from start to finish. The staff are friendly, helpful and they actually care about your experience. Plus, the cost was the same. If you're reading this, save yourself the stress and go to ALAMO.
As I was processing paperwork for rental the woman behind counter, Virginia, asked if I was in town for a graduation ceremony. I told her unfortunately I was there because my brother succumbed to injuries of an auto accident. She was so very kind and gave us a larger vehicle without me asking. I know this is just a simple car rental transaction, however I just wanted to point out the kindness of her and Thrifty and wanted to say Thank You
Another grievance of international travelers is about insurance, US car rental companies should really have a better insurance for international customers who do not carry over their insurance from abroad. The prices are ridiculous. There should be a different category for people who have a fine drivers record and insurance abroad.
I rented a car from Thrifty for a one-month road trip. They had a rental advertised for $450/month. I ended up paying nearly double that, so I think there should be more honesty in posted offers (but this is partially the US system that does not include taxes but also their system with different fees that add on to the base offer).
THE WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!!!!! Giving one star because I have to give something for this to post. One star is very generous, trust me.
Worst experience. Nobody showed up when I returned the car, plus they overcharged me for the car. Will never rent from thrifty again.
All in all you still can't beat their price on this but there are some points in their system that need refinement.
The worst rental company around. Its very clear that they don't care about customer service and the staff up to managers are incredibly rude and not helpful. A week and a half prior to when I needed the vehicle(for work), I went online to book a rental and specifically clicked on convertible. On the Wednesday prior, I called to make sure that I would still be getting a convertible. The person that I spoke to, said that I had 3 choices to pick from, a Chevy Camaro, a Mitsubishi, and a Chrysler 200. Since I needed a bigger one, I asked for the Chrysler 200. The girl I spoke with was bland and other than letting me know what the cars were, she couldn't tell me anything else about the vehicle types or size. Before we ended the conversation she verbally confirmed that I would be getting the Chrysler 200. Then come Friday evening, I go to pick up the vehicle and the girl behind the counter was on her phone and very unfriendly. As she starts processing the rental, I confirm that I will in fact be getting the convertible that I have now gone through two different avenues to make sure that that was what I was going to get. With a confused look on her face she says "uh uh... I need to call my manager." Why she was confused is beyond me! It says convertible on my reservation, I'm confused why she was about to give me something other than that without even saying anything. I had to ask! Once she got off her CELLPHONE she tells me that her manager said that they don't have a convertible available and that I could have something comparable with $50 off. I asked why even have an option to select convertible on their site if they don't have it available, why when I called on Wednesday, I had choices and even went further to request that specific type, and why I didn't get ONCE SINGLE CALL about there not being a convertible available, even though I'm sure they see my reservation come through. With nothing but a dumbfounded look, she could only say that she didn't know and who ever I spoke to on Wednesday didn't have any right to reserve that car for me. So basically their website has useless features that aren't applicable to what your actually going to get. Don't call the phone number, because they have no right to do anything. And the personal services has no care or clue as to how to help a customer. I asked if she knew of any other convertibles at another company and she said that she only knows of Budget because they're the same company.
