Please, please, please train your staff to have more tact in these situations.

Great veterinary hospital. Been going there since 1987. Thru 4 pets and just added 2 more.

We went to take my mom's dog to be euthanized due to some health and bite issues. He had gotten in a fight with another dog and the guy whose dog it was reached down into the fight to pull them apart and ended up getting bit. We still don't know what dog it was, but he told animal control it was our dog. So, by law, the dog needs to be quarantined for 10 days. My mom was not willing to do this---so because of his health issues (he had degenerative arthritis in all his legs). When we went in, due to the bite situation, the nurse told us, and I quote, "if we euthanize him with a bite hold, we will have to take his head when we are done". UMMMM--TAKE HIS HEAD????? Such a lack of tact. What she meant was that they will have to take his body to the lab to do rabies tests and autopsy his brain for research purposes. But she literally said "we will have to take his head", to my mother, who was putting her heart and soul to sleep. I was appalled with the wording. My mom was already stressed and that sent her over the edge.

Pros: AMAZING and personable staff

While I normally love this vet and all who work there, I feel like this staff needs more training in tact and empathy. I understand that she wasn't trying to hurt us anymore, but she really needs to re-word things like that.

Aside from that--I would normally give this vet 5 stars. They have been really good to our dog.

I would not suggest going to this animal hospital! I would suggest going to Petroglyph animal hospital they are credited with the Better Business Bureau and have a A plus! I am researching now on the Better Business Bureau about this Animal Hospital VCA West Mesa Animal Hospital. I taking my dog there she was sick. After being tested for parvo and gerardia. She was treated for both! Only to find out that the parvo came back negative! On their pamphlet that they give out it states the puppy or dog must be diagnosed positive for parvo before treating! They charged me $400 and I believe they were just trying to get money from us! The dog had gerardia with a positive test and it was only $60 to treat! I do believe that these people are trying to scam and get over on anyone that comes in with a sick dog knowing that they will pay because they want to see their puppy get better. Grrrrrrr

Cons: Dr. Caffey's active listening skills

Excellent people my dog was very ill and needed to rest. The stuff of VCA west mesa was very caring and undertanding of our lost ..they show compassion and support . thank you !!!

The staff at and vet techs at VCA West Mesa are wonderful, friendly people that I would recommend in a heartbeat. However, I can't say the same for Dr. Caffey. There was no greeting when he came in the exam room, and I asked specific questions that were not satisfactorily answered. When I asked about which particular brand would be recommended for food, the front desk staff was more helpful in answering my questions than he was. She actually listed some brands to try while Dr. Caffey went with the generic answer of "any dry cat food will do." Additionally, when attempting to explain how my resident and new cat appeared to be interacting and what to do about it, Dr. Caffey jumped in while I was speaking to explain how cats usually react when introduced. I'm already well aware of the typical response, and therefore my inquiry was about the oddities I noticed in their reaction to each other, not what typically happens. When I was about to ask another question, he gave his parting words and left the room before I could finish talking. Dr. Caffey appears to be a very knowledgeable man, but there's plenty of room for improvement on his listening skills. A related answer is good, but an answer that addresses the posed question would be even better. I believe this would have been a 5-star visit if I'd had the pleasure of meeting one of the other veterinarians.
