I left this place in tears after a horrible first dental visit for my son. So different than what I was hoping for. Dr Hess did not show patience or understanding of the fears associated with a first dental visit. He threatened my son with making me leave and go to the waiting room if he didn't listen to his instructions rather than take the time to help him feel more comfortable. I can only imagine what would have gone on without me present. Not all children respond with fear by crying so some resistance should not have been so shocking to an experienced pediatric dentist. In the end, Dr Hess gave me a lecture about parenting and teaching my son that he must endure things such as this as "part of life". And even went further to say that children who aren't taught these things end up "shooting up schools". Just horrifying.
Dr. Hess has the soul of a poet (and the temperament sometimes too). He cares so much for the children he helps, but also, even though he has been doing this for forty-five years, he still is concerned with the developing dental knowledge. He seems to have educated himself on the latest scholarship and practices and formed reasoned opinions and incorporated them into his work. This in itself would be worth a recommendation, but the true majesty of Dr. Hess can be realized if we as parents listen carefully while Dr. Hess does his work. As he leans over a patient in his chair with his tools in the young person’s mouth we can hear the soft kind words continuously coming from Dr. Hess, comforting our children.
We have been coming here for years and plan to continue on until they kick us out!
We have been very pleased with this dentist, his staff, and office. He is great with kids and he has provided a very positive experience of going to the dentist's office for my two children.
Dr. Hess was patient and also provided clear communication to our very reluctant-about-the-dentist 3.5 year old. He was able to guide her through the filling of two cavities with no anesthetic and she was a happy camper during and after. This mama is grateful for a caring and experienced professional when it comes to this vulnerable aspect of receiving healthcare. I shed tears of worry, but won't need to now that I know for future visits she is in good hands.
Dr. Hess is a special person.
Lastly, this office treats you like you are their only client--we have never felt rushed, brushed over, or not heard. I had reservations at first about various methods, and instead of insisting or brushing my concerns aside, Dr. Hess was happy to sit and talk with me about those concerns and even go into past and current studies of these various methods (this is huge to me--doctors and dentists that not only do the required upkeep of education but who immerse themselves in it and make it their responsibility to not only educate themselves but also their patients).
I highly recommend him.
You cannot imagine the relief I had as Dr. Hess says, "We should be able to do this without numbing." I was in disbelief. Not only that, but the entire staff treats my kids as real people, talking to them not at or over them.
Recently after my son suffered through two fillings, he said to me in the car heading home that he thought Dr. Hess might be Santa Claus. At best in the dental chair it’s an uncomfortable experience and still within ten minutes of my son’s emergence he compared Dr. Hess to the mythical and loving St. Nick. That’s special.
After previously having bad experiences with dentists, my kids were terrified of them, particularly the numbing when cavities were filled. We put it all off until the inevitable happened--a sore tooth.
